One of only ten produced in 1962, this Pontiac Bonneville hearse by Superior was last seen listed at $7,366.66 in Novato, California. Known as a Consort Landaulet funeral car, these were the rarest of Superior’s Consort line of professional cars — funeral coaches, landaulets, and limousines built on the original wheelbase. Superior delivered just 171 Consorts during the 1961 model year, a 39-unit increase over the prior year, yet only 10 Landaulet models were sold, built, and delivered for 1962.
The data plate identifies this as Superior Coach Corporation model 5642, body number 1080, with a manufacturing date of May 8, 1962, built at Superior’s Southern Division in Kosciusko, Mississippi. These “compact” professional cars rode a 123-inch wheelbase with an overall length of 218⅝ inches. The rear compartment measured a full 101¼ inches in length, 60 inches in width, and offered 38½ inches of headroom. Finished with a white top over a black body and a black and white interior, this example carries the distinctive proportions that made the Consort line increasingly popular among funeral directors of the era.
