1962 Buick Premier Flxible Hearse

Built by the Flxible company in Ohio and shipped to Hollywood, California, this 1962 Buick Premier arrived with “redi-aire” provisions—holes cut into the firewall by the factory then covered with plates and screws for transit. The mortuary was intended to finish the paint, upholstery, and install the air conditioning upon delivery. While an a/c radiator, fan shroud, and plates were installed, the project stalled before completion. Business cards found under the seat from Abbott & Hast Mortuary sparked an investigation revealing the coach’s storied past.

Abbott & Hast Mortuary is famously known as the location where Marilyn Monroe was during her death in 1962. Owner Ron Hast confirmed prior ownership of the Buick, noting it was a “Premier” model with viewing glass all the way around and no landau bars—a rare configuration allowing people to see the casket from all sides. Another 1962 Premier existed but was not stretched, making this one-of-one. Purchased as a luxury model stretched over three feet longer than standard, it was originally intended for a “female-only” clientele to honor actresses from the 1920s through 40s. During the transformation, Monroe passed away. Although the mortuary initially painted the hearse pink (her favorite color), public outcry to lay Monroe to rest halted the project. Weeks from completion, they opted for a black hearse used in video footage instead.

Later retired and purchased by collector Paul Nix, the hearse joined five Cadillac hearses in a dry storage unit outside Hollywood. After approximately 30 years in hot sun storage, the coach was sold to a friend who subsequently lost the title. The storage facility eventually sold it via highest bidder to recover costs, bringing the vehicle to rest in Portland, Oregon.
