Last seen for sale at $1,625 in September 2023, this 1978 Cadillac “Jack In The Box” Hearse by Distortions Unlimited haunted the streets of Worcester, Massachusetts for an astonishing three decades. During every Halloween season, this hearse emerged from the Halloween Outlet showroom with a monstrous head popping from a box mounted atop the roof—a delightfully morbid game of hide-and-seek designed to send chills down spines and lure customers through the store’s doors. At its peak operation, the Halloween Outlet employed three full-time staff members solely to drive this ghoulish spectacle around town.
Powered by a 425 cubic inch engine with heavy-duty suspension and oversized tires built for the macabre duty, the prop was created by Distortions Unlimited, a Halloween prop shop from Colorado. The eerie Jack mechanism catapulted the company to fame, earning them a feature on the television show “Making Monsters.” Now that the Halloween Outlet has retired into history, this one-of-a-kind haunting machine remains a testament to the creative extremes of seasonal marketing—one that played a delightful game of fear with everyone brave enough to walk West Boylston Street in October.
