1986 Rolls-Royce Hearse: A Unique Gem in Blue
Originally a European-spec sedan that debuted in Germany before traveling to the United States via Japan in 2016, this 1986 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit Hearse was transformed into a funeral coach by a previous owner, complete with a distinctive wagon-like roofline, taller rear doors, a sliding casket carrier, and full interior curtains. Originally finished in black, the car was repainted in its current striking blue by a previous owner, giving it a unique identity among Silver Spirit conversions. The odometer displays approximately 64,400 kilometers (40,000 miles) on a metric instrument cluster, retaining its European charm on American soil.
Factory equipment includes 15-inch alloy wheels with metal hubcaps, a hydropneumatic suspension system, elegant wood interior trim, plush beige leather upholstery, red carpet, a cassette player, and cruise control. Under the hood sits a robust 6.75-liter V8 delivering 237 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, paired with a three-speed automatic transmission sending power to the rear wheels. The Silver Spirit introduced a more expansive, lower, and angular design in 1980 compared to its predecessor, sharing its roots with the Bentley Mulsanne and Turbo models before bowing out in 1999.
Notable flaws include a 2004 date code on the tires, a fuel leak at the carburetor, and a Freon leak in the air conditioning system’s low-pressure line. Minor cosmetic issues such as swirl marks in the paint and creases in the leather upholstery are also present, though they do not diminish the vehicle’s distinctive character. During the current owner’s tenure, the air conditioning compressor was replaced. The sale included three keys, German and Japanese owner’s manuals, and a car cover. The vehicle holds a clean title in Washington State.
